My Therapeutic Approach

THERAPY FOR ADULTS It is important to consider my approach to therapy when deciding if we would be a good fit for each other! My therapeutic approach tends to be more attachment focused, which means I believe that healing happens within relationships. That sounds simple, right? Well, it can be! But too often, we experience relational trauma, chronic stress, unmet childhood needs, abuse, or we just feel too overwhelmed by the day to day hustle and bustle. As stressors accumulate, feelings of anxiety, depression, being easily irritable/fatigued, or feelings of being on autopilot or disconnected can take over. When these things take over, our internal resources can become depleted and it can be hard to tap into ourselves or to the people around us in order to gain the support we need. Which is where therapy, specifically a therapist utilizing an attachment and emotion focus (opposed to a more cognitive/behavioral approach), can be helpful! I like to take a slow and mindful approach to therapy that feels safe to both my client and the therapeutic relationship. Through open and honest communication/feedback, I hope the therapeutic relationship can serve as both a safe place, and also a place to feel challenged to explore inwardly and grow outwardly. Together, I hope we can build a brave space for you to connect to yourself, foster self-compassion, and make long lasting changes. Lastly, I hope that during the therapeutic process, you can build resilience and experience more joy and connectedness in your relationships that can support your mental health long after our time in therapy has ended. THERAPY FOR KIDS, TEENS, AND FAMILIES: Common issues I treat in kids and teens are grief and loss, self-esteem, frequent emotional outbursts, trauma, and supporting families through caregiver transitions (i.e. step parenting, foster care/adoption/kinship, caregiver death, etc.). Because I take an attachment focused approach, I do not utilize a behavior-based model. While oftentimes parents seek therapy for their child because of behavioral concerns or frequent meltdowns, I take a relational approach to help parents/caregivers connect and co-regulate with their children as a means to improving behaviors and building resiliency. Therapy for kids 0-10: While I love working with younger children, I see the parents/caregivers as crucial players in the therapeutic process. When providing therapy to younger children, I like to work closely with parents/caregivers to help them understand, connect, and enjoy their child. Because all families and children have different needs, this can look different for every family and child. When seeking therapy for your elementary aged child, you should expect a heavy focus on family and parent sessions, in addition to individual sessions with your child. Therapy for pre-teens/teens 10-17: Adolescence can be a tricky time for parents/caregivers and teens. Unlike therapy for younger children, I tend to work primarily with older kids (roughly age 10 and up) on an individual basis. Based on your specific preteen/teen’s needs and treatment goals, you should expect periodic family sessions to check in and possibly address ongoing concerns impacting the family dynamic. Family/Co-parenting: In addition to therapy for kids/teens, I also provide family therapy for the whole family unit. Because families are so unique, this varies from family to family. Sometimes, this looks like having sessions with parents/caregivers to help them get on the same page and make the best parenting choices for their children. Other times, this looks like family members of various ages coming together to identify new ways to help their family function. If you are considering family therapy, let’s have a conversation about your family’s needs and we can come up with a plan to work towards those goals!
